I read and understand the rules. Now what?

* How should I go about submitting my fan fiction to be archived?

Great news - I have installed a script that will allow you to have an account at this site and upload fics at your leisure.
Do note that I have the settings for pre-approval on - I must approve your fics before they become visible. If you become a regular contributor with quality work, I'll lift this restriction on your account. Until then, all submissions are subject to my approval. Read on if you need to know what I'm looking for when approving fan fics for archival at this site.

* What guidelines or restrictions do you impose on fic to be submitted?

Not much, really.

First thing is, it's obviously gotta be a He-Man fan fic. Crossovers and alternate universe fics are fine, so long as some characters from He-Man figure into the plot.

I won't be censoring for actual content at all. I only ask that if your story is excessively violent, has adult situations, etc that you give it an appropriate rating (much like movies are rated) and warnings (fields for which are provided on the form you'll use to submit your work). That way, folks who don't wish to read such things are given ample warning. Also, include a short synopsis of your fic - some kind of description is required. If you leave the summary field blank I won't approve your fic. If you'd like to leave contact information, do so either in the summary or in your account bio.
I've provided a blanket copyright disclaimer in the Fan Fiction section, but if you'd like to add your own it's up to you.

The only other way to be disapproved for the hosting of your fic is if it's entirely incomprehensible. I will not host stories that are so slopped together that they lack the proper grammar, punctuation, etc to be easily understood. That's just a waste of people's time and my web space. I realize we're all amateur writers in this field, but I also feel I need to hold submissions to some kind of basic standard.

* In what form should I send my stories?

With this new software, you have the option of uploading an actual html file or copy & pasting the html of your story into the story submission form (if you don't know html, don't worry - most word processors have an option on them so that you can save your document as an html file). You'll be directed to preview how your story will look (don't worry about the side scroll bar in the preview page - it won't be there when the story is viewed for real) - make sure the spacing, indenting, font, etc is how you wish it to look. If I have to go through and do a bunch of editing to make your story readable, I probably won't bother and I'll just not approve your story to be archived. So use some common sense when formatting your stuff.

* Do you have a sample of a rating system?

They're will be a drop-down menu with movie-type ratings to choose from. Stories rated PG-13 to NC-17 will have a generic javascript warning/disclaimer pop up when a visitor clicks on the link of stories with those ratings. It's just a typical ass-covering measure on my part. It's up to you to add other warnings and such you deem appropriate.
Here's a general idea of what each rating means -

G: This is a general rating that basically says your story is as harmless in content as the average Disney animanted flick.

PG: Some cussing, mild innuendo and implied violence would probably deserve this rating.

PG-13: Occassional cussing, innuendo and mild violence coupled with adult themes would earn this rating.

R: Outright swearing, sexual content and violence earn this one.

NC-17: Graphically written slash fics and/or fics that have a goodly amount of any kind of graphically described sex and violence should bear this rating. I'll host it, but I want everyone to be thoroughly forwarned!

* Can I recommend other great fics I've enjoyed that aren't mine?

Since anything you upload under your account gets added to your story archive, it's not a good idea - it gives the impression you wrote the story and we don't want to sell anyone short where credit is concerned. It's better to tell a writer you think might be interested in posting their fics here about this site and let them decide.

On the same note, anything you submit that you claim was penned by you had *better* be your own work. I'll be very pissed if you submit plagiarized stuff. Needless to say, 'your' fics will be deleted if plagiarism of any kind is brought to my attention and you'll be banned from the fic archives here, even if you later offer your own work.

* I submitted my fic to you and you posted it, now it's gone. What's the big idea??

Okay, this scenario hasn't happened yet, but I'm going to pretend it has just in case this ever does come up.

As the owner of the site, I reserve the right to take down your fic without warning and for whatever reason. My reasons could range anywhere from copyright complaints to running out of webspace to host them. And then there's always the possibility of my webhost farking up and losing data. That possibility is even greater now that all the stories are going into an sql database - I'll make backups, but there's no gurantee I can reinstall it successfully if something happens.

At any rate, you should always keep a backup copy of your work - either saved on your computer or a disc. Surely don't bank on my page as being the ever-living archive of your fic! I do try to keep updated backups of my whole site, but even that's not fool proof -- especially when I have a five year old running around the house spilling things and/or breaking stuff LOL ;)

Bottom line is, if your fic gets taken down, deleted, lost -- whatever -- don't cry to me. It's a privelege to be hosted on web server space I'm paying for and maintaining, not a right. So if your fic disappears, it was either beyond my control or I exercised my own discretion. However, if it does get taken down due to a decision I make, I will attempt to give you the courtesy of an explaination so long as I still have means to contact you.

* I took my first stab at fic writing and I'm really nervous about submitting it to be read by others. Would you consider reading it and tell me what you think first?

I totally sympathize with that question. I was in the same place two years ago when I started my ThunderCats fic, when a writer I respected was kind enough to give my first few chapters a once over and give her advice on them.

While I'm flattered you'd trust my judgment that much, and while I have done this very thing for a few of the writers either in the ThunderCats archives or soon to be featured there, I may not always have the time. It doesn't hurt to ask, but don't take it personal if I have to decline due to being too busy.

If you feel you must get some preliminary feedback before your work is publically posted, try searching the web for a beta reader -- there are clubs and mailing lists out there devoted to people who will gladly read your work.

My final advice to you is the same advice the kind lady who gently encouraged me imparted -- if writing a fic is something you've always wanted to do, just do it. You'll be truly pleasantly surprised at fan reaction to your work, but to get those reactions you have to put yourself and your ideas out there for scrutiny. Scary at first, but not as bad as you might envision. I've found that even when people find something odd or confusing about something I've written, they're very kind in pointing it out -- having more of a helpful tone than a mocking one. Fic writing is a great way to grow as a writer and I recommend you just go for it! Publishing your work and having it read is the only way to get that ever-valuable feedback that helps you grow :)

* I tried uploading an html file to the new system, and it just won't format right. What's wrong?

It's been brought to my attention that some of the authors who have made accounts have not added their work because it just won't upload right. After some trouble shooting, it would appear that the fic managing system used on this site only likes simple html tags - the simpler the better.
For instance, fics written using Microsoft Word often format to html using xml tags which the efic management system definitely does not like.
The solution? Format your fics using something that doesn't add a lot of complicated or new-fangled html tags...or go through and strip and replace the 'bad' tags with simpler ones. You may decide this is too much trouble and more power to ya - I'm just letting you know why things don't quite turn out the way you might expect while previewing your submissions on this site.
I've also noticed that <p> tags seem to cause formatting problems by double spacing fics that aren't meant to be - again, you can strip those tags and replace them with the more formatting-friendly <br> tags by using the find and replace feature on your word processor or html editor (actually, the system automatically recognizes carrige returns, so conceivably, you could just strip the tags without replacing them with new ones). Or you can just leave it...spacing such as this is more an aesthtic issue than one that would render your work unreadable. Do whatever you're comfortable with.
Also be sure to double check and make sure your story doesn't get truncated or cut off. This has also been a problem for some people and I've found no true reason why...length shouldn't be an issue unless your story is HUGE. If that's the case, try splitting the story into shorter blocks.
If all else fails, you can always just copy and paste the story without any html whatsoever. The only issue you may have with that is things you may have set off in bold or italics might not show up until you insert the html for it by hand.
I suppose the overall advice is keep it simple!

* I read and understand the rules. Now what?

Now you can upload your work. When you click on the preceeding link, it'll open in a new window as the software was originally intended for the fiction submitted to my larger and older website concerning ThunderCats. Recently, I added areas for He-Man and Voltron works to be added, so simply find the appropriate category to deposit your work. You will have to create an account first, which can be done by clicking on the 'log in' link. Once you have an account and start uploading, you'll be able to add subsequent chapters, edit old ones and even track how many page views each story has recieved - all through an easy web interface.
Happy writing!
